About the Phyang Festival

Phyang is one of the two Dringungpa monasteries in Ladakh. Like other monastic festivals, sacred dance - dramas or ‘Chhams’ form the core of this festival. But the main attraction for the devotees is the pilgrimage to the huge Thangka (a silk painting with embroidery, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, famous scene or mandala of some sort) of Skyabje Jigten Gombo, founder of the Dringungpa monastic order, which is kept on exhibition during the two-day festival. Like other Ladakhi festivals, the festival closes with the destruction of the Storma (effigy of evil spirits) on the final day of the festival.

present this program—Mighty Mountains and Valleys of Ladakh. Join us in exploring the remote Buddhist area of India. In “Little Tibet,” our small group will explore a mixture of historical, religious and natural sites, and catch a portion of the legendary Silk Road.

We’ve selected the best time of year to visit the majestic Himalayas; we’ve scheduled the dates to coincide with an important event in the Buddhist calendar. We return to Delhi for a short visit. If we’re lucky we might experience a bit of the monsoon season. We can’t promise, as weather is always variable. It will be hot this time of year in Delhi, but we are offering an optional extension to Idyllic Srinagar Kashmir, also best visited in the summer.

Please read and enjoy our brochure. Then, if you have any questions, please call us. We look forward to welcoming you to this very special tour and preparing you for this great adventure. The journey is limited to a small group of serious travelers.
